Ozempic is a pill now: what the oral semaglutide shake-up means

What happened

For years, “Ozempic” meant a weekly injection and “Rybelsus” the daily tablet. Novo Nordisk has now folded both under one name: the FDA approved Ozempic as the proprietary name for the oral tablets in February 2026, and the new tablets, redesigned for improved bioavailability at 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg, became available in the United States on May 4, 2026. Rybelsus tablets are being phased out, and anyone taking them needs a fresh prescription for the new-generation tablets.

On the weight-management side, an oral 25 mg semaglutide under the Wegovy name became available in early 2026, the first time a GLP-1 at weight-loss dosing has been offered as a pill in the US. Novo has also submitted the 25 mg tablet to the FDA for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), with a decision expected in late 2026 or early 2027.

Why it matters

Needle aversion has been one of the last practical barriers around GLP-1 therapy. A tablet option at meaningful dosing changes the conversation for a large group of patients, and it sharpens the contrast with the grey market: as approved oral options expand, there is even less reason to gamble on unregulated “research” semaglutide sold online, a category the FDA has been actively warning about all year.
